SAT Math tutoring, one to one
Most students who come for Math tutoring can already do the mathematics. What they are losing marks to is something else — and until you know which of the five causes it is, more practice sets will not move the number.
What the Math section actually is
Forty-four questions in 70 minutes, split into two modules of 22, of which 40 are scored and four are unscored pretest items that look exactly like the rest. A calculator is allowed throughout, with Desmos built into the Bluebook app. Roughly a quarter of the questions are student-produced responses with no options to choose from. The section is scored from 200 to 800 and forms half of the 1600 total.
The content is not advanced. There is no calculus, no proof, nothing an able sixteen-year-old has not met. What is unusual is the density: a question can hold three conditions and one buried instruction, and the whole thing has to be read correctly at about ninety seconds a question.
The four domains, and where the marks sit

Question counts as published by College Board; they describe the 40 scored questions, since four of the 44 on any form are unscored pretest items. Algebra and Advanced Math together are about two thirds of the section, so a weakness in either is worth roughly twice a weakness in the other two.
Why able mathematicians stall at 700
This is the single most common shape of enquiry: a student in a strong maths set, predicted well at A level or Higher Level IB, sitting at 680 or 700 and unable to explain why. The score report says Math, so the assumption is that some maths is missing. It usually is not.
Sort a few mocks by cause rather than by topic and the pattern comes out. The lost questions are typically split between misreads — solving for the right thing in the wrong variable, or answering the question the student expected rather than the one asked — and slips, meaning sign errors and transcription errors that the student can spot in two seconds when shown. Genuine content gaps are usually a minority.
That matters because the three causes have completely different remedies. Content is taught. Misreads are fixed by changing how a question is read before any working starts. Slips are fixed by building a checking habit into the solution rather than bolting one on at the end. Doing more practice papers treats all three as though they were the first.
Using Desmos well
- Worth graphing: systems of equations, intersections, roots of an awkward quadratic, anything where "how many solutions" is the question, and sanity-checking an answer you already have.
- Not worth graphing: anything that resolves in two lines of algebra, and anything requiring a function to be typed in carefully — the typing is itself a place to make an error.
- The real skill is the decision. Choosing the route in the first five seconds is what separates students who finish the module comfortably from students who run out of time having answered everything correctly so far.
- Practise in Bluebook, because the built-in Desmos behaves slightly differently from the website and test day is the wrong moment to discover it.
The student-produced responses
About a quarter of the section has no answer options. This changes the mathematics not at all and the risk profile considerably: elimination is unavailable, back-solving from the options is unavailable, and the usual safety net — noticing that your answer is not among the four — is gone. A slip here is simply a lost mark.
They also have entry rules worth knowing before test day rather than during it: the answer has to fit the box, mixed numbers must be entered as improper fractions or decimals, and units, commas and percent signs are not entered. None of this is difficult, and all of it has cost students marks.
What the lessons do
- Live on a shared whiteboard that both tutor and student write on, so the working is visible as it happens rather than described afterwards. That is the only way to see where a misread actually occurs.
- Every wrong answer classified by cause, not by topic — content, misread, slip, timing or judgment — and the largest category worked on first.
- A live topic tracker, one row per College Board domain, so every content area is covered, practised and signed off before the sitting rather than assumed.
- Homework after every lesson, marked before the next one, and full-length timed mocks in Bluebook so the adaptive routing behaves realistically.

Common questions about SAT Math
How many questions are on the SAT Math section?
The Math section has 44 questions in 70 minutes, split across two modules of 22. About three quarters are multiple choice, with four options each, and the rest are student-produced responses, where the answer is typed in rather than selected. Four of the 44 are unscored pretest questions, and nothing on screen marks out which. That works out at a little over 95 seconds per question on average, though the questions are not evenly demanding and the time is not meant to be spent evenly.
What topics are on the SAT Math section?
Four content domains. College Board publishes the spread across the 40 scored questions as 13 to 15 on Algebra, 13 to 15 on Advanced Math, 5 to 7 on Problem-Solving and Data Analysis, and 5 to 7 on Geometry and Trigonometry. The remaining four questions on any form are unscored pretest items. Algebra and Advanced Math together therefore make up roughly two thirds of the scored section, which is where preparation time is best concentrated for most students.
Why is my SAT Math score low when I am good at maths?
Because the section tests something narrower and stranger than school mathematics. It rewards turning dense English into the right equation quickly, watching for the specific quantity asked for, and staying accurate at speed. A student who has met every topic on it can still lose eight questions to misreadings, sign errors and answering a slightly different question from the one on the screen. That is a different problem from a content gap and it takes a different fix.
Can you use a calculator on SAT Math?
Yes, for the whole section. A Desmos graphing calculator is built into the Bluebook testing app and students may also bring an approved calculator of their own. The separate no-calculator section from the old paper SAT no longer exists. Knowing when not to reach for it is now part of the skill, because a graph that takes ninety seconds to set up can lose more time than the algebra would have taken.
What are student-produced response questions on the SAT?
They are the SAT Math questions with no answer options, where the student types the answer into a box. Roughly a quarter of the Math section works this way. Because nothing is offered to eliminate, and a wrong answer cannot be caught by noticing it is not on the list, these questions punish careless arithmetic more heavily than the multiple-choice ones do. Answers must fit the entry box, and mixed numbers have to be entered as improper fractions or decimals.
Does Altair Prep teach SAT Math and Reading and Writing separately?
Both are taught, and by the same person.
