Lewis Watson

Lewis read Chemical Engineering at the University of Cambridge and has tutored full time since 2015. He teaches both halves of the Digital SAT himself — the Math with an engineer’s command of the quantitative section, Reading & Writing with the ear for language the verbal half rewards.

Much of the early work was residential, living with families in Dubai and Saudi Arabia and teaching through term time and exam season, before the practice moved mostly online. More about Lewis →

Why students in Geneva come to one-to-one lessons

Geneva is the birthplace of the IB, and the schools around the lake, Ecolint's three campuses, Collège du Léman, Institut Florimont, Aiglon and the Lausanne schools among them, send a large cohort to universities in the United States every year. Many of those students belong to families who move: diplomats, UN and NGO staff, people on multinational postings who may be in a different country by the time the application is submitted.

That mobility is the Geneva-specific problem. A student who arrives in Grade 10 from a French Bac school, or who will leave halfway through Grade 12, cannot fit a local test-prep course that runs on a fixed calendar and assumes the same student turns up every week for a term. And even for families who stay, the pattern is the same as in most of Switzerland: strong mathematics, a school that speaks two or three languages, and a Reading and Writing section that is a foreign kind of test.

Online one-to-one lessons travel with the student. The tutor, the plan and the homework stay the same whether the family is in Geneva, on home leave, or already relocated.

Lesson times in Geneva

Geneva is on Central European Time (UTC+1, UTC+2 in summer). These are the slots students here book most often, with the corresponding UK time in both halves of the year, so you can see the lesson falls inside a normal working day at the tutor's end, which is what keeps a weekly slot stable through a whole term.

Lesson time where you are UK time, Apr–Oct UK time, Oct–Mar
2.00pm1pm UK1pm UK
3.00pm2pm UK2pm UK
4.00pm3pm UK3pm UK
5.00pm4pm UK4pm UK
6.00pm5pm UK5pm UK

Switzerland moves between CET and CEST on the same weekends the UK moves between GMT and British Summer Time, so the gap is one hour all year round and your lesson time never needs adjusting.

Common questions from Geneva

Is there online SAT tutoring for students in Geneva?

Yes. Altair Prep teaches one-to-one Digital SAT lessons online to students in Geneva, Lausanne and the wider Lake Geneva region, live over a shared interactive whiteboard. Lewis Watson, a Cambridge-educated tutor with a perfect 1600, teaches every lesson himself and covers both the Math and the Reading and Writing halves of the test, with homework marked between sessions.

What time are SAT lessons for students in Geneva?

Geneva is one hour ahead of the UK throughout the year, since Switzerland changes its clocks on the same weekends. A 5.00pm lesson in Geneva is 4.00pm in London, so Altair Prep can hold after-school slots in Swiss time as a standing weekly appointment, with weekend lessons available for students whose weekdays are already full.

We may relocate before the application is submitted. Does that matter?

Not to the teaching. Altair Prep's lessons are online, so a family moving from Geneva to another posting keeps the same tutor, the same plan and the same marked homework; only the lesson time is renegotiated for the new time zone. Lewis Watson has taught students through moves between Europe, the Gulf and Asia without a break in the programme.

Is the SAT needed for Swiss universities?

No. Swiss universities admit on the Matura, the IB or an equivalent school-leaving qualification and do not use the SAT. It is required or recommended for most applications to universities in the United States, and accepted by some institutions elsewhere. A Geneva student applying to both EPFL and a US university needs the SAT for the US half only.

Preparing for the SAT in Geneva?

Tell Lewis the target score, the sitting you are aiming at and where the marks are going now. The intro call and the trial lesson are both free, both in Swiss time, and there is nothing to pay before them.
