Lewis Watson

Lewis read Chemical Engineering at the University of Cambridge and has tutored full time since 2015. He teaches both halves of the Digital SAT himself — the Math with an engineer’s command of the quantitative section, Reading & Writing with the ear for language the verbal half rewards.

Much of the early work was residential, living with families in Dubai and Saudi Arabia and teaching through term time and exam season, before the practice moved mostly online. More about Lewis →

Why students in Zurich come to one-to-one lessons

Zurich's SAT cohort is split in a way few cities are. Part of it sits in the international schools, at Zurich International School, the Inter-Community School and the SIS campuses, following the IB or an American programme with a counsellor who has seen a hundred US applications. The other part is in the cantonal Gymnasien, working towards the Matura, where an application to Stanford or MIT is something the school may never have handled before.

The two groups need different things. The IB and American-curriculum students usually know what the SAT is and need the score moved; the Matura students are often very strong mathematically but have never met a timed multiple-choice test in English, and the Reading and Writing half costs them marks that have nothing to do with ability. Local test-prep centres in Zurich run a single course for both, on a fixed evening timetable that competes with sport, music and the commute home from a school in another municipality.

One-to-one lessons start from which of those students you actually are, and are scheduled around a Swiss school week rather than the other way round.

Lesson times in Zurich

Zurich is on Central European Time (UTC+1, UTC+2 in summer). These are the slots students here book most often, with the corresponding UK time in both halves of the year, so you can see the lesson falls inside a normal working day at the tutor's end, which is what keeps a weekly slot stable through a whole term.

Lesson time where you are UK time, Apr–Oct UK time, Oct–Mar
2.00pm1pm UK1pm UK
3.00pm2pm UK2pm UK
4.00pm3pm UK3pm UK
5.00pm4pm UK4pm UK
6.00pm5pm UK5pm UK

Switzerland moves between CET and CEST on the same weekends the UK moves between GMT and British Summer Time, so the gap is one hour all year round and your lesson time never needs adjusting.

Common questions from Zurich

Can I find an online SAT tutor in Zurich?

Yes. Altair Prep teaches one-to-one Digital SAT lessons online to students in Zurich, live over a shared interactive whiteboard that both tutor and student write on. Every lesson is taught by Lewis Watson, a Cambridge-educated tutor with a perfect 1600, covering both the Math and the Reading and Writing halves of the test. Homework is set after every lesson and marked before the next.

What time are SAT lessons for students in Zurich?

Switzerland is one hour ahead of the UK all year, because it changes clocks on the same weekends. A 4.00pm lesson in Zurich is 3.00pm in London, so Altair Prep holds afternoon and early-evening slots in Swiss time as a fixed weekly appointment. Wednesday afternoons, free in many cantonal timetables, are a popular choice.

I am doing the Matura. Can I still apply to US universities with the SAT?

Yes, and many Zurich students do. US universities accept the Swiss Matura as a school-leaving qualification and use the SAT alongside it, so the score matters more for a Matura student than for one at an international school with a familiar transcript. Altair Prep works with students whose school has never sent anyone to the US before, and helps with the timing as well as the test.

Where can students in Zurich take the SAT?

At approved international test centres in Switzerland, which are typically hosted by international schools in the Zurich area and elsewhere in the country. The list changes from sitting to sitting, so check College Board's test centre search when registration opens rather than assuming last year's centre will run again, and book early, because seats in Switzerland are limited.

Preparing for the SAT in Zurich?

Tell Lewis the target score, the sitting you are aiming at and where the marks are going now. The intro call and the trial lesson are both free, both in Swiss time, and there is nothing to pay before them.
