Why students in Hong Kong come to one-to-one lessons
Hong Kong has a long-established route into American universities and, with it, a large and well-developed test-prep industry. Most students arriving for one-to-one lessons have already done a course. Often two.
That history shapes the problem. Students come in fluent in strategy language (they can name the techniques, they know the pacing rules) and are still stuck at the same score they were at when the last course ended. What has usually happened is that the strategy has been learned as a set of rules to apply rather than as a set of judgments to make, and the SAT is specifically designed to punish that. Its hardest questions look like the textbook case and then break the pattern.
Unpicking that takes somebody watching an individual student's actual working, question by question. It does not take another course.
Lesson times in Hong Kong
Hong Kong is on UTC+8. These are the slots students here book most often, with the corresponding UK time in both halves of the year, so you can see the lesson falls inside a normal working day at the tutor's end, which is what keeps a weekly slot stable through a whole term.

The UK moves between GMT and British Summer Time in late March and late October; Hong Kong does not change clocks, so the UK-side time shifts by an hour twice a year while your lesson time stays put.
What is specific to Hong Kong
- Hong Kong is on UTC+8, seven hours ahead of the UK in summer and eight in winter, so a 5.00 or 6.00pm lesson lands in the UK morning, a slot that stays reliable through the term.
- Prior courses are taken seriously. If a student has already done group prep, the first job is finding what stuck, what did not, and which rules are now actively costing marks.
- Hong Kong test centres see heavy demand. Register early; deadlines are in the test date table.
- Reading & Writing taught by a native English speaker, and the Math by the same tutor: the verbal half is never handed to an associate.
- Billed in pounds sterling by card link or bank transfer, with nothing to pay before the free intro call and trial lesson.
How the lessons themselves work
- Live one-to-one on a shared whiteboard that both tutor and student write on, not a recorded course, and not a screen-share of somebody talking.
- Homework set after every lesson and marked before the next, included in the rate.
- Full-length timed mocks in Bluebook, set, marked and reviewed, so nothing on test day is unfamiliar.
- A live topic tracker (one row per College Board domain) so every content area is covered, practised and signed off before the sitting. Parents can see it whenever they like.
- Progress updates to parents after every mock, and a review call whenever you want one.

In Hong Kong the SAT is not run in schools. The listings are Hong Kong Examinations and Assessment Authority (HKEAA) centres in Kowloon, where each exam room has its own code, and, for some sittings, large venues on Lantau near the airport or in Tuen Mun. International schools in Hong Kong
Many students preparing for the SAT in Hong Kong are at one of its international schools. Among the best known are Hong Kong International School, Chinese International School, Canadian International School of Hong Kong and German Swiss International School.
What lessons cost from Hong Kong
One rate for every student: £135 an hour, roughly HK$1,430 at mid-2026 exchange rates. Lessons are billed in pounds sterling on the day each one takes place, so the local figure moves with the exchange rate. The intro call and the trial lesson are free. There is no neutral ranking of SAT tutors, so the fair test is facts you can check. Is online SAT tutoring effective from Hong Kong?

My child has already taken an SAT course and the score has not moved. What now?
This is the most common reason students come to Altair Prep. Group courses teach strategy as a set of rules to apply, and the SAT's hardest questions are deliberately built to look like the textbook case and then break the pattern — so the rules fail at precisely the point the student needs them. The fix is someone watching how a particular student works through individual questions, which a course of any size cannot do.
Is the SAT still worth taking if universities are test-optional?
Usually yes, where the student can score well. A strong score is additional evidence in an application's favour, and under a test-optional policy a disappointing one can simply be withheld. Several selective US universities have also reinstated a requirement since suspending it, so a score keeps options open that a missing one closes.
