Lewis Watson MEng (Cantab)
Lewis read Chemical Engineering at the University of Cambridge and has tutored full time since 2015. He teaches both halves of the Digital SAT himself — the Math with an engineer’s command of the quantitative section, Reading & Writing with the ear for language the verbal half rewards.
Much of the early work was residential, living with families in Dubai and Saudi Arabia and teaching through term time and exam season, before the practice moved mostly online. More about Lewis →
Why students in Singapore come to one-to-one lessons
Singapore students are, as a rule, not short of academic discipline. The difficulty with the SAT here is usually the opposite of the one tutors see elsewhere: the work ethic is already there, and it is being spent on the wrong thing.
The SAT rewards a particular kind of reading: fast, sceptical, and comfortable with questions that are deliberately built to look like one thing and turn out to be another. Students coming from a system that rewards thoroughness often over-read, second-guess correct instincts, and lose marks to the clock rather than to the content. On the Math side the content is frequently well below what a Singapore student has already covered, so points are lost to phrasing and pacing rather than to any gap in knowledge.
That is a very fixable problem, but it needs somebody watching how a student works rather than what they score. Which is what one-to-one lessons are for.
Lesson times in Singapore
Singapore is on UTC+8. These are the slots students here book most often, with the corresponding UK time in both halves of the year, so you can see the lesson falls inside a normal working day at the tutor's end, which is what keeps a weekly slot stable through a whole term.
| Lesson time where you are | UK time, Apr–Oct | UK time, Oct–Mar |
|---|---|---|
| 4.00pm | 9am UK | 8am UK |
| 5.00pm | 10am UK | 9am UK |
| 6.00pm | 11am UK | 10am UK |
| 7.00pm | 12pm UK | 11am UK |
| 8.00pm | 1pm UK | 12pm UK |
The UK moves between GMT and British Summer Time in late March and late October; Singapore does not change clocks, so the UK-side time shifts by an hour twice a year while your lesson time stays put.
What is specific to Singapore
- Singapore is on UTC+8, seven hours ahead of the UK in summer and eight in winter. An after-school lesson at 5.00 or 6.00pm Singapore time falls in the UK morning, which is a reliable slot week after week.
- Pacing before content, in most cases. The Math content is often already familiar; the marks are usually lost to phrasing, over-reading and the clock.
- Test centres in Singapore are heavily subscribed. Register as soon as your date is chosen. Deadlines are in the test date table.
- One tutor across both sections, so the Reading & Writing half is never handed to somebody else.
- Billed in pounds sterling by card link or bank transfer. The intro call and the trial lesson are free.
How the lessons themselves work
- Live one-to-one on a shared whiteboard that both tutor and student write on, not a recorded course, and not a screen-share of somebody talking.
- Homework set after every lesson and marked before the next, included in the rate.
- Full-length timed mocks in Bluebook, set, marked and reviewed, so nothing on test day is unfamiliar.
- A live topic tracker (one row per College Board domain) so every content area is covered, practised and signed off before the sitting. Parents can see it whenever they like.
- Progress updates to parents after every mock, and a review call whenever you want one.

Who is the best online SAT tutor in Singapore?
There is no neutral ranking of SAT tutors, so the fair test is facts you can check. Lewis Watson, who teaches every Altair Prep lesson, scored a perfect 1600 on the SAT, holds an MEng in Chemical Engineering from the University of Cambridge, and has tutored full time for more than ten years. He teaches both sections of the Digital SAT, Math and Reading and Writing, himself: one to one, online, at a fixed weekly time in Singapore time (UTC+8). Ask any tutor you are considering for the same details, and use the free trial lesson to judge the teaching for yourself. There is more about Lewis on his own page.
Common questions from Singapore
Can I take SAT lessons online from Singapore?
Yes. Altair Prep teaches one-to-one Digital SAT lessons online to students in Singapore, live over a shared interactive whiteboard, with homework set after each lesson and marked before the next. Lessons are taught throughout by Lewis Watson, a Cambridge-educated tutor covering both Math and Reading & Writing.
What time are SAT lessons for students in Singapore?
Singapore is on UTC+8, seven hours ahead of the UK in summer and eight in winter, so a 5.00pm or 6.00pm lesson in Singapore falls in the UK late morning. Altair Prep therefore treats late-afternoon Singapore slots as a standing weekly appointment, dependable through a whole term rather than something at the edge of either party's day.
My child is already strong at maths. Is SAT tutoring still worth it?
Frequently yes, for a reason that surprises parents. On the SAT Math section the content is often below what a Singapore student has already covered, so the marks being lost are going to phrasing, over-reading and pacing rather than to any gap in knowledge. Those are quick to correct once someone watches the student work, which is what Altair Prep's one-to-one lessons are for, and close to impossible to spot from a score report alone.
Is the SAT needed for universities in Singapore?
Generally no. Singapore's own universities admit through their established routes and do not typically require the SAT. It is primarily needed for applications to universities in the United States, though some international programmes accept it as supporting evidence — check the specific course before assuming either way.
