Lewis Watson
Lewis read Chemical Engineering at the University of Cambridge and has tutored full time since 2015. He teaches both halves of the Digital SAT himself — the Math with an engineer’s command of the quantitative section, Reading & Writing with the ear for language the verbal half rewards.
Much of the early work was residential, living with families in Dubai and Saudi Arabia and teaching through term time and exam season, before the practice moved mostly online. More about Lewis →
Why students in Bangalore come to one-to-one lessons
Bangalore's SAT cohort is heavily weighted towards engineering and computer science applications. Students from the international schools, Canadian International, Stonehill, TISB, Indus, Inventure and Mallya Aditi among them, and from strong CBSE and ICSE schools across the city, are frequently applying to US universities for STEM, often with a parent who works in the technology industry and knows exactly which universities they mean.
That produces a very specific score profile. The Math is usually excellent, and often already at or near 800 before any tutoring, because the content is well below what an Indian school has covered. The Reading and Writing score is the problem, and it is a problem that batch coaching handles badly, because it teaches the verbal section as a set of rules and the hardest questions on the Digital SAT are written to look like the rule and then break it.
What moves the verbal score is a native English speaker watching an individual student read an individual passage, live, and correcting the habit rather than the answer. That is what these lessons are, and the Math is taught by the same tutor as a precision-and-pacing problem rather than a content one.
Lesson times in Bangalore
Bangalore is on Indian Standard Time (UTC+5:30). These are the slots students here book most often, with the corresponding UK time in both halves of the year, so you can see the lesson falls inside a normal working day at the tutor's end, which is what keeps a weekly slot stable through a whole term.
| Lesson time where you are | UK time, Apr–Oct | UK time, Oct–Mar |
|---|---|---|
| 4.00pm | 11.30am UK | 10.30am UK |
| 5.00pm | 12.30pm UK | 11.30am UK |
| 6.00pm | 1.30pm UK | 12.30pm UK |
| 7.00pm | 2.30pm UK | 1.30pm UK |
| 8.00pm | 3.30pm UK | 2.30pm UK |
The UK moves between GMT and British Summer Time in late March and late October; India does not change clocks, so the UK-side time shifts by an hour twice a year while your lesson time stays put.
What is specific to Bangalore
- India is on Indian Standard Time (UTC+5:30), four and a half hours ahead of the UK in summer and five and a half in winter. A 7.00pm lesson in Bangalore is early afternoon in London, so evening slots are easy to hold every week.
- Reading & Writing gets the attention when the Math is already near 800. Taught by a native English speaker, question by question, until the verbal score catches up.
- Board exams shape the year. For CBSE and ICSE students the Class 12 boards run from February into April, so the main SAT attempt is planned for Class 11 or the autumn of Class 12.
- No commute across Bengaluru. A lesson costs an hour, not an hour plus the traffic between Whitefield and Koramangala.
- Billed in pounds sterling by card link or bank transfer, after each lesson. Fees are on the fee sheet; the intro call and the trial lesson are free.
How the lessons themselves work
- Live one-to-one on a shared whiteboard that both tutor and student write on, not a recorded course, and not a screen-share of somebody talking.
- Homework set after every lesson and marked before the next, included in the rate.
- Full-length timed mocks in Bluebook, set, marked and reviewed, so nothing on test day is unfamiliar.
- A live topic tracker (one row per College Board domain) so every content area is covered, practised and signed off before the sitting. Parents can see it whenever they like.
- Progress updates to parents after every mock, and a review call whenever you want one.

Common questions from Bangalore
Is there online SAT tutoring for students in Bangalore?
Yes. Altair Prep teaches one-to-one Digital SAT lessons online to students across Bangalore, live over a shared interactive whiteboard, with homework set after each lesson and marked before the next. Lewis Watson, a Cambridge-educated tutor with a perfect 1600, teaches every lesson himself and covers both the Math and the Reading and Writing halves of the test.
What time are SAT lessons for students in Bangalore?
Bangalore is on Indian Standard Time, UTC+5:30, which is four and a half hours ahead of the UK in summer and five and a half in winter. A 7.00pm lesson in Bangalore is 2.30pm or 1.30pm in London, so Altair Prep holds evening slots in Indian time as a standing weekly appointment, with weekend lessons available for students carrying a heavy weekday load.
My child's SAT Math is already near 800. Is tutoring still worth it?
Yes, because the marks that remain are almost all on Reading and Writing, and that section is the one batch coaching handles least well. Altair Prep's lessons for a student with this profile spend most of the time on the verbal half, taught by a native English speaker working through individual questions live, with the Math kept sharp through timed practice rather than re-taught.
Is the SAT required for engineering applications to US universities?
It depends on the university. Many selective US engineering programmes have reinstated an SAT requirement after a test-optional period, and others remain test-optional but treat a strong score as evidence in the application's favour. For a Bangalore student applying for computer science or engineering, a high score is rarely wasted, and Altair Prep plans the sittings so the score is ready before the earliest application deadline.
