Why students in Mumbai come to one-to-one lessons
Mumbai sends a very large cohort to universities in the United States every year, from the IB and IGCSE schools, Dhirubhai Ambani International, the American School of Bombay, Oberoi International, Ecole Mondiale, Jamnabai Narsee and others, and increasingly from ICSE and CBSE schools whose students would once have applied only in India. The SAT is also now used by a growing number of Indian universities, Ashoka and Krea among them, so the score has a domestic use it did not have a decade ago.
The coaching market has grown to match, and it is almost entirely batch-based: a room of students at very different scores, working through the same material to the same calendar. That is effective for a student at 1100 with broad gaps. It stalls in the 1400s, because by then two students with identical scores are losing marks for entirely different reasons, and a batch cannot address either of them individually.
The other thing specific to Mumbai is the commute. Two hours across the city for a ninety-minute class is common, and it is the student's time. Online lessons return it.

Mumbai is on Indian Standard Time (UTC+5:30). These are the slots students here book most often, with the corresponding UK time in both halves of the year, so you can see the lesson falls inside a normal working day at the tutor's end, which is what keeps a weekly slot stable through a whole term.

The UK moves between GMT and British Summer Time in late March and late October; India does not change clocks, so the UK-side time shifts by an hour twice a year while your lesson time stays put.
What is specific to Mumbai
- India is on Indian Standard Time (UTC+5:30), four and a half hours ahead of the UK in summer and five and a half in winter. A 6.00pm lesson in Mumbai is early afternoon in London, so after-school slots are straightforward.
- Board exams shape the calendar. For ICSE and CBSE students the Class 12 boards run from February into April, so the main SAT attempt is planned for Class 11 or the autumn of Class 12, with the spring kept clear.
- No commute. A lesson costs an hour, not an hour plus the journey from Bandra to Powai and back.
- Mumbai test centres fill early for the autumn sittings, and some students end up registering in Pune. The test date table has every deadline.
- Billed in pounds sterling by card link or bank transfer, after each lesson. Fees are on the fee sheet; the intro call and the trial lesson are free.

- Live one-to-one on a shared whiteboard that both tutor and student write on, not a recorded course, and not a screen-share of somebody talking.
- Homework set after every lesson and marked before the next, included in the rate.
- Full-length timed mocks in Bluebook, set, marked and reviewed, so nothing on test day is unfamiliar.
- A live topic tracker (one row per College Board domain) so every content area is covered, practised and signed off before the sitting. Parents can see it whenever they like.
- Progress updates to parents after every mock, and a review call whenever you want one.

IB and IGCSE students have more room, but the same principle of planning backwards from the exam calendar applies.
Do Indian universities accept the SAT?
Some do, and the number is growing. Ashoka, Krea and a group of other Indian universities accept the SAT in admissions through the India Global Higher Education Alliance, and requirements vary by institution and year, so check the specific programme. For a Mumbai student that means one test can serve both an Indian application and a US one, on different timetables.
