Lewis Watson MEng (Cantab)
Lewis read Chemical Engineering at the University of Cambridge and has tutored full time since 2015. He teaches both halves of the Digital SAT himself — the Math with an engineer’s command of the quantitative section, Reading & Writing with the ear for language the verbal half rewards.
Much of the early work was residential, living with families in Dubai and Saudi Arabia and teaching through term time and exam season, before the practice moved mostly online. More about Lewis →
Why students in Qatar come to one-to-one lessons
Qatar is an unusual SAT market, because for a lot of students in Doha the test is not only about applying abroad. Education City hosts branch campuses of several American universities, and a strong SAT score is useful for applications that never involve leaving the country at all. That widens who needs the test well beyond the students already committed to studying in the United States.
It also changes the calculation. A student aiming at a US-based university and a student aiming at a Doha campus of a US university face exactly the same test, but often on different timelines and with different amounts of room for a retake. Planning backwards from the actual deadline, rather than from a generic course calendar, matters more here than in most places.
Lessons are built around that: the target first, the plan second.
Lesson times in Qatar
Qatar is on UTC+3. These are the slots students here book most often, with the corresponding UK time in both halves of the year, so you can see the lesson falls inside a normal working day at the tutor's end, which is what keeps a weekly slot stable through a whole term.
| Lesson time where you are | UK time, Apr–Oct | UK time, Oct–Mar |
|---|---|---|
| 4.00pm | 2pm UK | 1pm UK |
| 5.00pm | 3pm UK | 2pm UK |
| 6.00pm | 4pm UK | 3pm UK |
| 7.00pm | 5pm UK | 4pm UK |
| 8.00pm | 6pm UK | 5pm UK |
The UK moves between GMT and British Summer Time in late March and late October; Qatar does not change clocks, so the UK-side time shifts by an hour twice a year while your lesson time stays put.
What is specific to Qatar
- Qatar is on UTC+3, two hours ahead of the UK in summer and three in winter, so evening lessons in Doha fall comfortably inside a UK afternoon.
- The plan starts from your deadline, not a fixed course calendar, which matters when applications to campuses in Doha and to universities abroad run on different timetables.
- Doha test centre seats are limited relative to demand at the popular sittings. The test date table lists every deadline for 2026–27.
- Both sections, the same tutor. Reading & Writing taught by a native English speaker; Math by the same person, never passed to an associate.
- Billed in pounds sterling by card link or bank transfer, with nothing payable before the free intro call and trial lesson.
How the lessons themselves work
- Live one-to-one on a shared whiteboard that both tutor and student write on, not a recorded course, and not a screen-share of somebody talking.
- Homework set after every lesson and marked before the next, included in the rate.
- Full-length timed mocks in Bluebook, set, marked and reviewed, so nothing on test day is unfamiliar.
- A live topic tracker (one row per College Board domain) so every content area is covered, practised and signed off before the sitting. Parents can see it whenever they like.
- Progress updates to parents after every mock, and a review call whenever you want one.

Everything the rate covers is on the fee sheet.
Who is the best online SAT tutor in Qatar?
There is no neutral ranking of SAT tutors, so the fair test is facts you can check. Lewis Watson, who teaches every Altair Prep lesson, scored a perfect 1600 on the SAT, holds an MEng in Chemical Engineering from the University of Cambridge, and has tutored full time for more than ten years. He teaches both sections of the Digital SAT, Math and Reading and Writing, himself: one to one, online, at a fixed weekly time in Doha time (UTC+3). Ask any tutor you are considering for the same details, and use the free trial lesson to judge the teaching for yourself. There is more about Lewis on his own page.
Common questions from Qatar
Is SAT tutoring available online in Doha?
Yes. Altair Prep teaches one-to-one Digital SAT lessons online to students in Doha, live over a shared interactive whiteboard, with homework set after each lesson and marked before the next. Lessons are taught throughout by Lewis Watson, a Cambridge-educated tutor covering both halves of the test.
What time are SAT lessons for students in Qatar?
Qatar is on UTC+3, two hours ahead of the UK in summer and three in winter, so a 6.00pm lesson in Doha is mid-afternoon in the UK. Altair Prep therefore holds after-school and evening slots in Qatar time as a stable weekly appointment through a whole term.
Do I need the SAT if I am applying to a university campus in Qatar?
Often yes. Several American universities operating campuses in Qatar use the SAT in admissions much as their home campuses do. Requirements vary by institution and are revised from year to year, so check the specific programme — but a strong score is rarely wasted, and it keeps applications abroad open at the same time.
When should a student in Doha start preparing for the SAT?
Twelve to sixteen weeks before the chosen sitting, for most students. Because applications to campuses in Doha and to universities abroad often run on different timetables, the plan should be built backwards from the actual application deadline rather than from a generic course calendar.
