Lewis Watson MEng (Cantab)
Lewis read Chemical Engineering at the University of Cambridge and has tutored full time since 2015. He teaches both halves of the Digital SAT himself: the Math with an engineer’s command of the quantitative section, Reading & Writing with the ear for language the verbal half rewards.
Much of the early work was residential, living with families in Dubai and Saudi Arabia and teaching through term time and exam season, before the practice moved mostly online. More about Lewis →
Why students in Dubai come to one-to-one lessons
Dubai has well over two hundred private schools teaching more than a dozen curricula. According to KHDA, the emirate's private schools regulator, British-curriculum schools teach the largest share of students and Indian-curriculum schools the next largest, with American and IB schools after them. That range is a real advantage for a family choosing a school, and a specific complication for SAT preparation, because each curriculum reaches the SAT having covered different mathematics, with different gaps.
The calendars differ as much as the content. Indian-curriculum schools in Dubai run from April to March, and the Class 12 board examinations fall between February and April, across the spring SAT sitting. For IB, AP and A-level students the clash comes later: their final examinations run from late April to late June, across the May sitting and, for A-levels, the June one as well. A group course runs one timetable for everybody, which in Dubai means the wrong timetable for much of the room.
The Dubai school year is familiar ground: Lewis spent part of his early career teaching in Dubai in person, before the practice moved online. One-to-one lessons start from the curriculum a student is actually on, and the sittings are chosen around that curriculum's calendar rather than a course timetable.
Lesson times in Dubai
Dubai is on UTC+4. These are the slots students here book most often, with the corresponding UK time in both halves of the year, so you can see the lesson falls inside a normal working day at the tutor's end, which is what keeps a weekly slot stable through a whole term.
| Lesson time where you are | UK time, Apr–Oct | UK time, Oct–Mar |
|---|---|---|
| 4.00pm | 1pm UK | 12pm UK |
| 5.00pm | 2pm UK | 1pm UK |
| 6.00pm | 3pm UK | 2pm UK |
| 7.00pm | 4pm UK | 3pm UK |
| 8.00pm | 5pm UK | 4pm UK |
The UK moves between GMT and British Summer Time in late March and late October; the UAE does not change clocks, so the UK-side time shifts by an hour twice a year while your lesson time stays put.
What is specific to Dubai
- Dubai is on UTC+4, three hours ahead of the UK in summer and four in winter. A 6.00pm lesson in Dubai is mid-afternoon in London, so after-school slots are straightforward to hold every week.
- School ends by 11.30am on Fridays. That has been the latest finish for Dubai's private schools since January 2026, which makes Friday afternoon an easy fixed slot for a lesson.
- Sittings chosen by curriculum. For Indian-curriculum students the boards usually rule out the March sitting in Class 12. In the final year, IB and AP exams usually rule out the May sitting, and A-levels both May and June. The main attempt goes where the student's own calendar has room, with a resit in hand.
- Sharjah and the Northern Emirates too. The lessons, the time zone and the plan are the same for a student in Sharjah, Ajman or Ras Al Khaimah, and College Board lists test centres in all three.
- Billed in pounds sterling by card link or bank transfer, after each lesson. Fees are on the fee sheet; the intro call and the trial lesson are free.
How the lessons themselves work
- Live one-to-one on a shared whiteboard that both tutor and student write on, not a recorded course, and not a screen-share of somebody talking.
- Homework set after every lesson and marked before the next, included in the rate.
- Full-length timed mocks in Bluebook, set, marked and reviewed, so nothing on test day is unfamiliar.
- A live topic tracker (one row per College Board domain) so every content area is covered, practised and signed off before the sitting. Parents can see it whenever they like.
- Progress updates to parents after every mock, and a review call whenever you want one.

Who is the best online SAT tutor in Dubai?
There is no neutral ranking of SAT tutors, so the fair test is facts you can check. Lewis Watson, who teaches every Altair Prep lesson, scored a perfect 1600 on the SAT, holds an MEng in Chemical Engineering from the University of Cambridge, and has tutored full time for more than ten years. He teaches both sections of the Digital SAT, Math and Reading and Writing, himself: one to one, online, at a fixed weekly time in UAE time (UTC+4). Ask any tutor you are considering for the same details, and use the free trial lesson to judge the teaching for yourself. There is more about Lewis on his own page.
Common questions from Dubai
Can I find a one-to-one SAT tutor in Dubai?
Yes, online. Altair Prep teaches students across Dubai one to one, live over a shared interactive whiteboard that both tutor and student write on, at a fixed weekly time in UAE time. Every lesson is taught by Lewis Watson, a Cambridge-educated tutor with a perfect 1600 who lived and taught in Dubai earlier in his career, and he covers both Math and Reading and Writing himself.
What time are SAT lessons for students in Dubai?
After school or in the early evening, UAE time. Dubai is on UTC+4, three hours ahead of the UK in summer and four in winter, so a 6.00pm lesson in Dubai falls in the UK afternoon and Altair Prep can hold it as a fixed weekly slot. Since January 2026 Dubai's private schools have finished by 11.30am on Fridays, so Friday afternoon lessons are also available.
When should a student on the Indian curriculum in Dubai sit the SAT?
Before the Class 12 boards, with a resit to spare. Indian-curriculum schools in Dubai run from April to March, and the Class 12 boards fall between February and April, across the March sitting. Altair Prep usually aims a first attempt at the May or June sitting at the start of Class 12 and keeps an autumn sitting for the resit, so both scores are in hand before most regular US application deadlines in January.
Do Dubai students need the SAT for UK universities?
Usually not. Students taking A-levels or the IB are admitted on those, and UK universities do not ask them for the SAT. American-curriculum students are usually assessed on their AP results, and many UK universities also accept SAT scores alongside the APs or in place of some of them: Oxford, for example, accepts three APs plus a high SAT score instead of a fourth AP. Altair Prep plans the sittings so the SAT does not crowd the exams a UK offer depends on.
