Lewis Watson MEng (Cantab)

Lewis read Chemical Engineering at the University of Cambridge and has tutored full time since 2015. He teaches both halves of the Digital SAT himself — the Math with an engineer’s command of the quantitative section, Reading & Writing with the ear for language the verbal half rewards.

Much of the early work was residential, living with families in Dubai and Saudi Arabia and teaching through term time and exam season, before the practice moved mostly online. More about Lewis →

Why students in the UAE come to one-to-one lessons

The UAE has probably the densest concentration of international schools anywhere in the region: British curriculum, American curriculum and IB, often within a few streets of each other. That variety is a real advantage for a family, and a specific complication for SAT preparation.

A student on the IB Diploma and a student on A-levels arrive at the SAT having covered genuinely different mathematics, with different gaps. An American-curriculum student has usually seen the content but not the timing pressure. A group SAT course cannot accommodate that; it teaches to whichever background the majority of the room happens to have, and everyone else spends half the course either bored or lost.

One-to-one teaching starts from what a particular student has actually been taught, which in the UAE is the difference between a course that fits and a course that mostly does not.

Lesson times in the UAE

The uae is on UTC+4. These are the slots students here book most often, with the corresponding UK time in both halves of the year, so you can see the lesson falls inside a normal working day at the tutor's end, which is what keeps a weekly slot stable through a whole term.

Lesson time where you are UK time, Apr–Oct UK time, Oct–Mar
4.00pm1pm UK12pm UK
5.00pm2pm UK1pm UK
6.00pm3pm UK2pm UK
7.00pm4pm UK3pm UK
8.00pm5pm UK4pm UK

The UK moves between GMT and British Summer Time in late March and late October; UAE does not change clocks, so the UK-side time shifts by an hour twice a year while your lesson time stays put.

What lessons cost from the UAE

One rate for every student: £135 an hour, roughly AED 670 at mid-2026 exchange rates. Lessons are billed in pounds sterling on the day each one takes place, so the local figure moves with the exchange rate. The intro call and the trial lesson are free. Everything the rate covers is on the fee sheet.

Who is the best online SAT tutor in the UAE?

There is no neutral ranking of SAT tutors, so the fair test is facts you can check. Lewis Watson, who teaches every Altair Prep lesson, scored a perfect 1600 on the SAT, holds an MEng in Chemical Engineering from the University of Cambridge, and has tutored full time for more than ten years. He teaches both sections of the Digital SAT, Math and Reading and Writing, himself: one to one, online, at a fixed weekly time in UAE time (UTC+4). Ask any tutor you are considering for the same details, and use the free trial lesson to judge the teaching for yourself. There is more about Lewis on his own page.

Common questions from the UAE

Can I find an online SAT tutor in Dubai?

Yes. Altair Prep teaches one-to-one Digital SAT lessons online to students in Dubai, Abu Dhabi and Sharjah, live over a shared interactive whiteboard. Homework is set after each lesson and marked before the next, and every lesson is taught by Lewis Watson, a Cambridge-educated tutor covering both Math and Reading & Writing.

What time are SAT lessons for students in the UAE?

The UAE is on UTC+4, three hours ahead of the UK in summer and four in winter, so a 6.00pm lesson in Dubai lands mid-afternoon in the UK. Altair Prep therefore holds after-school and early-evening slots in UAE time as a fixed weekly appointment rather than a favour at the edge of the day. Weekend lessons are also possible.

Does it matter whether my school follows the IB, A-levels or an American curriculum?

It matters a great deal, which is why Altair Prep teaches one-to-one rather than in groups. Students from different curricula reach the SAT with different gaps: an IB student and an A-level student have covered genuinely different mathematics, while an American-curriculum student has usually met the content but not the pacing pressure. Teaching starts from what the individual student has actually been taught.

Do UAE students need the SAT for UK universities?

No. UK universities admit on A-levels, the IB or equivalent qualifications and do not ask for the SAT. It is required for applications to universities in the United States, and is accepted by a number of institutions elsewhere. A student applying to both the UK and the US will normally need the SAT for the US half of the list only.
