Lewis Watson
Lewis read Chemical Engineering at the University of Cambridge and has tutored full time since 2015. He teaches both halves of the Digital SAT himself — the Math with an engineer’s command of the quantitative section, Reading & Writing with the ear for language the verbal half rewards.
Much of the early work was residential, living with families in Dubai and Saudi Arabia and teaching through term time and exam season, before the practice moved mostly online. More about Lewis →
Why students in Bangkok come to one-to-one lessons
Bangkok is unusual in that the SAT matters for students who never intend to leave. The international programmes at Chulalongkorn, Thammasat and Mahidol, the BBA and the engineering and economics programmes among them, use the SAT or an equivalent in admissions, and a strong score is one of the main routes in. That puts the test on the desks of students at Thai bilingual schools as well as those at ISB, NIST, Bangkok Patana, Shrewsbury, Harrow, KIS and Ruamrudee who are applying to the US.
The two groups need different teaching. The international-school students usually know the test and need the score moved from the 1300s or 1400s; the bilingual-school students are often very strong on the Math and meeting the Reading and Writing section, with its fast and sceptical kind of reading, for the first time. Bangkok's group courses, which are plentiful, teach to whichever group is the majority in the room.
One-to-one lessons start from which student you are and which deadline binds, the Thai programme's or the US university's, and build the plan backwards from it.
Lesson times in Bangkok
Bangkok is on UTC+7. These are the slots students here book most often, with the corresponding UK time in both halves of the year, so you can see the lesson falls inside a normal working day at the tutor's end, which is what keeps a weekly slot stable through a whole term.
| Lesson time where you are | UK time, Apr–Oct | UK time, Oct–Mar |
|---|---|---|
| 4.00pm | 10am UK | 9am UK |
| 5.00pm | 11am UK | 10am UK |
| 6.00pm | 12pm UK | 11am UK |
| 7.00pm | 1pm UK | 12pm UK |
| 8.00pm | 2pm UK | 1pm UK |
The UK moves between GMT and British Summer Time in late March and late October; Thailand does not change clocks, so the UK-side time shifts by an hour twice a year while your lesson time stays put.
What is specific to Bangkok
- Thailand is on UTC+7, six hours ahead of the UK in summer and seven in winter. A 5.00pm lesson in Bangkok is late morning in London, a slot that holds steady through the term.
- Thai university programmes are planned for as well as US ones. Where a Chula or Thammasat international programme is the target, the score range and the deadline set the plan.
- Reading & Writing taught by a native English speaker, which matters most for bilingual-school students meeting the section for the first time. The Math is taught by the same tutor.
- Bangkok test centres are heavily subscribed. Register as soon as the date is chosen: the test date table lists every deadline.
- Billed in pounds sterling by card link or bank transfer, after each lesson. Fees are on the fee sheet; the intro call and the trial lesson are free.
How the lessons themselves work
- Live one-to-one on a shared whiteboard that both tutor and student write on, not a recorded course, and not a screen-share of somebody talking.
- Homework set after every lesson and marked before the next, included in the rate.
- Full-length timed mocks in Bluebook, set, marked and reviewed, so nothing on test day is unfamiliar.
- A live topic tracker (one row per College Board domain) so every content area is covered, practised and signed off before the sitting. Parents can see it whenever they like.
- Progress updates to parents after every mock, and a review call whenever you want one.

Common questions from Bangkok
Is there online SAT tutoring for students in Bangkok?
Yes. Altair Prep teaches one-to-one Digital SAT lessons online to students in Bangkok, live over a shared interactive whiteboard, at a fixed weekly time in Thailand's own afternoon or evening. Every lesson is taught by Lewis Watson, a Cambridge-educated tutor with a perfect 1600, covering both Math and Reading and Writing, with homework marked between lessons.
What time are SAT lessons for students in Thailand?
Thailand is on UTC+7, six hours ahead of the UK in summer and seven in winter, so a 5.00pm lesson in Bangkok is 11.00am or 10.00am in London. Altair Prep holds after-school slots in Thai time as a standing weekly appointment, and weekend lessons are available for students whose weekdays are already full.
Do Thai universities use the SAT for admission?
Several international programmes do. Programmes at Chulalongkorn, Thammasat, Mahidol and others accept the SAT in admissions, often alongside or in place of their own tests, and the required scores and accepted alternatives change from year to year, so check the specific programme. Altair Prep plans around the programme's deadline and score range in the same way it would for a US application.
My child is at a Thai bilingual school. Is the SAT realistic?
Yes, and the Math is often the strong half from the start. The work is usually on Reading and Writing, which tests a fast, sceptical kind of reading that most school English does not, and that is exactly what one-to-one lessons with a native English speaker are for. Altair Prep starts from what the student has actually been taught rather than assuming an international-school background.
