Lewis Watson
Lewis read Chemical Engineering at the University of Cambridge and has tutored full time since 2015. He teaches both halves of the Digital SAT himself — the Math with an engineer’s command of the quantitative section, Reading & Writing with the ear for language the verbal half rewards.
Much of the early work was residential, living with families in Dubai and Saudi Arabia and teaching through term time and exam season, before the practice moved mostly online. More about Lewis →
Why students in Jakarta come to one-to-one lessons
Jakarta's international-school cohort, at JIS, the British School Jakarta, ACG, the Australian Independent School, Sinarmas World Academy and the national-plus schools, sends a steady stream of students to the United States, Australia and the UK. For the US half of that list the SAT is usually required or strongly advised, and it is often the piece of the application a family has least experience of.
The Jakarta-specific obstacle is not the test-prep market, which is thinner than Singapore's but does exist; it is the city. A journey from Pondok Indah or BSD to a centre in Central Jakarta for a two-hour class can take longer than the class, and it is the student's time, in a year when there is no spare. Group courses also assume every student in the room shares a curriculum, and Jakarta's students are on the IB, A-levels, the Australian curriculum, the American programme and the national-plus mix, with quite different gaps.
Online one-to-one lessons remove the journey and the assumption. The lesson runs at a fixed time in Jakarta's own afternoon, and starts from what that student has actually been taught.
Lesson times in Jakarta
Jakarta is on Western Indonesian Time (UTC+7). These are the slots students here book most often, with the corresponding UK time in both halves of the year, so you can see the lesson falls inside a normal working day at the tutor's end, which is what keeps a weekly slot stable through a whole term.
| Lesson time where you are | UK time, Apr–Oct | UK time, Oct–Mar |
|---|---|---|
| 4.00pm | 10am UK | 9am UK |
| 5.00pm | 11am UK | 10am UK |
| 6.00pm | 12pm UK | 11am UK |
| 7.00pm | 1pm UK | 12pm UK |
| 8.00pm | 2pm UK | 1pm UK |
The UK moves between GMT and British Summer Time in late March and late October; Indonesia does not change clocks, so the UK-side time shifts by an hour twice a year while your lesson time stays put.
What is specific to Jakarta
- Jakarta is on Western Indonesian Time (UTC+7), six hours ahead of the UK in summer and seven in winter. A 5.00pm lesson in Jakarta is late morning in London, a slot that holds steady through the term.
- No traffic. A lesson costs an hour rather than an hour plus a crossing of the city, which over a twelve-week run returns most of a working week to the student.
- Curriculum is the starting point. IB, A-level, Australian, American and national-plus students arrive with different gaps, and the first lessons are spent finding out which are yours.
- Jakarta test centre seats are limited, and some students sit in Singapore instead. Whichever you choose, register early: the test date table has every deadline.
- Billed in pounds sterling by card link or bank transfer, after each lesson. Fees are on the fee sheet; the intro call and the trial lesson are free.
How the lessons themselves work
- Live one-to-one on a shared whiteboard that both tutor and student write on, not a recorded course, and not a screen-share of somebody talking.
- Homework set after every lesson and marked before the next, included in the rate.
- Full-length timed mocks in Bluebook, set, marked and reviewed, so nothing on test day is unfamiliar.
- A live topic tracker (one row per College Board domain) so every content area is covered, practised and signed off before the sitting. Parents can see it whenever they like.
- Progress updates to parents after every mock, and a review call whenever you want one.

Common questions from Jakarta
Can I get SAT tutoring online in Jakarta?
Yes. Altair Prep teaches one-to-one Digital SAT lessons online to students in Jakarta, Tangerang and BSD, live over a shared interactive whiteboard, with homework set after each lesson and marked before the next. Every lesson is taught by Lewis Watson, a Cambridge-educated tutor with a perfect 1600, who covers both the Math and the Reading and Writing halves of the test himself.
What time are SAT lessons for students in Indonesia?
Jakarta is on Western Indonesian Time, UTC+7, six hours ahead of the UK in summer and seven in winter, so a 5.00pm lesson in Jakarta is 11.00am or 10.00am in London. Altair Prep holds after-school slots in Jakarta time as a fixed weekly appointment for the whole term, and weekend lessons are available for students whose weekdays are full.
Where do students in Jakarta take the SAT?
At approved international test centres in Jakarta, usually hosted by international schools, and some families choose to sit in Singapore instead where the choice of dates is wider. Which centres open for a given sitting changes from date to date, so check College Board's test centre search when registration opens and book as soon as the date is settled, because seats in Jakarta are limited.
Is one-to-one online tutoring better than a group SAT course in Jakarta?
For most students past the 1200s, yes. A group course teaches to the majority of the room and cannot start from an individual student's curriculum or errors, and in Jakarta it also costs a journey across the city at both ends. Altair Prep's lessons are live, one-to-one, on a shared whiteboard, and built around what a particular student is getting wrong rather than a fixed syllabus.
