Lewis Watson

Lewis read Chemical Engineering at the University of Cambridge and has tutored full time since 2015. He teaches both halves of the Digital SAT himself — the Math with an engineer’s command of the quantitative section, Reading & Writing with the ear for language the verbal half rewards.

Much of the early work was residential, living with families in Dubai and Saudi Arabia and teaching through term time and exam season, before the practice moved mostly online. More about Lewis →

Why students in Kuala Lumpur come to one-to-one lessons

Kuala Lumpur's SAT students come from two quite different places. One group is at the international schools, ISKL, Alice Smith, Garden, Mont Kiara International, Nexus and the rest, following the IB, A-levels or an American programme, with a counsellor and a calendar. The other is at Malaysian schools and colleges, often on an American Degree Transfer Programme at Taylor's, Sunway or INTI, where the SAT decides which US university the credits transfer to.

The second group is the one most SAT courses in KL are not built for. A student who has done SPM and is now on a transfer programme has strong mathematics and very little experience of the SAT's particular kind of reading: fast, sceptical, and full of questions written to look like one thing and turn out to be another. Group courses, which teach the majority of the room, tend to teach past them.

One-to-one lessons start from where a particular student actually is, IGCSE or SPM, IB or ADTP, and build the plan from the transfer or application deadline backwards.

Lesson times in Kuala Lumpur

Kuala Lumpur is on UTC+8. These are the slots students here book most often, with the corresponding UK time in both halves of the year, so you can see the lesson falls inside a normal working day at the tutor's end, which is what keeps a weekly slot stable through a whole term.

Lesson time where you are UK time, Apr–Oct UK time, Oct–Mar
4.00pm9am UK8am UK
5.00pm10am UK9am UK
6.00pm11am UK10am UK
7.00pm12pm UK11am UK
8.00pm1pm UK12pm UK

The UK moves between GMT and British Summer Time in late March and late October; Malaysia does not change clocks, so the UK-side time shifts by an hour twice a year while your lesson time stays put.

Common questions from Kuala Lumpur

Can I take SAT lessons online from Kuala Lumpur?

Yes. Altair Prep teaches one-to-one Digital SAT lessons online to students across Kuala Lumpur and the Klang Valley, live over a shared interactive whiteboard, with homework set after each lesson and marked before the next. Every lesson is taught by Lewis Watson, a Cambridge-educated tutor with a perfect 1600, covering both Math and Reading and Writing.

What time are SAT lessons for students in Malaysia?

Malaysia is on UTC+8, seven hours ahead of the UK in summer and eight in winter, so a 5.00pm lesson in Kuala Lumpur is 10.00am or 9.00am in London. Altair Prep treats late-afternoon and early-evening Malaysian slots as a standing weekly appointment, dependable for the length of a term, with weekend lessons available too.

Does the SAT matter for an American Degree Transfer Programme?

Usually yes. On an ADTP at Taylor's, Sunway, INTI or similar, the SAT score is part of what decides which US universities accept the transfer credits and at what level, so a stronger score widens the list. Altair Prep plans around the transfer deadline rather than a generic course calendar, and targets the range the intended universities expect.

I did SPM rather than IGCSE. Will that hold me back on the SAT?

Not on the Math, where SPM students are typically well prepared and the content is familiar. The gap, where there is one, is usually on Reading and Writing, which tests a fast, sceptical kind of reading that Malaysian school English rarely demands. Altair Prep teaches that half live with a native English speaker, starting from what the student has actually been taught rather than assuming an international-school background.
