Lewis Watson

Lewis read Chemical Engineering at the University of Cambridge and has tutored full time since 2015. He teaches both halves of the Digital SAT himself — the Math with an engineer’s command of the quantitative section, Reading & Writing with the ear for language the verbal half rewards.

Much of the early work was residential, living with families in Dubai and Saudi Arabia and teaching through term time and exam season, before the practice moved mostly online. More about Lewis →

Why students in Amman come to one-to-one lessons

Amman has an unusually strong set of American-curriculum and IB schools for a city its size: the American Community School, King's Academy in Madaba, the International Academy Amman, the Amman Baccalaureate School, the Modern American School and others, several of them founded specifically to send students to universities in the United States. The SAT is part of the furniture at these schools in a way it is not in most of the region.

It is also used closer to home. A number of universities in Jordan, Lebanon and the wider region, the American University of Beirut among the best known, use the SAT in admissions, so a strong score keeps open options that never involve leaving the Middle East. That means an Amman student is often preparing for two different deadlines and two different score targets at once, and a generic course calendar serves neither.

One-to-one lessons plan backwards from the deadline that actually binds, and from the score the student needs rather than the one a course syllabus assumes.

Lesson times in Amman

Amman is on UTC+3. These are the slots students here book most often, with the corresponding UK time in both halves of the year, so you can see the lesson falls inside a normal working day at the tutor's end, which is what keeps a weekly slot stable through a whole term.

Lesson time where you are UK time, Apr–Oct UK time, Oct–Mar
4.00pm2pm UK1pm UK
5.00pm3pm UK2pm UK
6.00pm4pm UK3pm UK
7.00pm5pm UK4pm UK
8.00pm6pm UK5pm UK

Jordan has kept UTC+3 all year since 2022 and no longer changes clocks; the UK moves between GMT and British Summer Time in late March and late October, so the UK-side time shifts by an hour twice a year while your lesson time stays put.

Common questions from Amman

Can I find an online SAT tutor in Amman?

Yes. Altair Prep teaches one-to-one Digital SAT lessons online to students in Amman and across Jordan, live over a shared interactive whiteboard that both tutor and student write on. Lewis Watson, a Cambridge-educated tutor with a perfect 1600, teaches every lesson himself, covering both Math and Reading and Writing, and homework is set after every lesson and marked before the next.

What time are SAT lessons for students in Jordan?

Jordan is on UTC+3 all year, having stopped changing clocks in 2022, so it is two hours ahead of the UK in summer and three in winter. A 6.00pm lesson in Amman is mid-afternoon in the UK, which lets Altair Prep hold evening slots in Jordan time as a fixed weekly appointment. Friday and Saturday lessons are also available.

Is the SAT used by universities in Jordan and the region?

Yes, by some. Several universities in Jordan, Lebanon and the wider Middle East, including the American University of Beirut, use the SAT in admissions, and requirements change from year to year, so check the specific programme. A student in Amman applying both regionally and to the United States faces the same test for both, usually on different timetables, and Altair Prep plans the sittings around whichever deadline comes first.

When should a student in Amman start SAT preparation?

For a first sitting, four to six months of weekly lessons alongside school is a realistic window. Altair Prep generally suggests starting in the autumn of the year before application and treating an autumn or winter sitting as the main attempt, which keeps a spring date free as a resit without colliding with Tawjihi, IB or AP examinations in May and June.

Preparing for the SAT in Amman?

Tell Lewis the target score, the sitting you are aiming at and where the marks are going now. The intro call and the trial lesson are both free, both in Jordan time, and there is nothing to pay before them.
