Lewis Watson

Lewis read Chemical Engineering at the University of Cambridge and has tutored full time since 2015. He teaches both halves of the Digital SAT himself — the Math with an engineer’s command of the quantitative section, Reading & Writing with the ear for language the verbal half rewards.

Much of the early work was residential, living with families in Dubai and Saudi Arabia and teaching through term time and exam season, before the practice moved mostly online. More about Lewis →

Why students in Kuwait City come to one-to-one lessons

Kuwait is one of the few places where the SAT is not only an admissions test. A large share of Kuwaiti students who study abroad do so on a government scholarship, and the scholarship bodies set minimum SAT scores for eligibility and for particular destinations. That turns the score into a gate rather than a tiebreaker: a student can have everything else in place and be a few dozen points short of the line.

The schools reflect the same orientation. Kuwait's American-curriculum schools, among them the American School of Kuwait, the American International School, the American Academy and the Universal American School, have sent students to the United States for decades, and the British and IB schools alongside them send a growing number. What most of those students meet locally is group preparation built around the same shortcut material, taught to a room at very different scores.

One-to-one lessons are built around a specific target: the threshold for the scholarship, the range for the university, and the sitting that gets there with a resit in hand.

Lesson times in Kuwait City

Kuwait City is on UTC+3. These are the slots students here book most often, with the corresponding UK time in both halves of the year, so you can see the lesson falls inside a normal working day at the tutor's end, which is what keeps a weekly slot stable through a whole term.

Lesson time where you are UK time, Apr–Oct UK time, Oct–Mar
4.00pm2pm UK1pm UK
5.00pm3pm UK2pm UK
6.00pm4pm UK3pm UK
7.00pm5pm UK4pm UK
8.00pm6pm UK5pm UK

The UK moves between GMT and British Summer Time in late March and late October; Kuwait does not change clocks, so the UK-side time shifts by an hour twice a year while your lesson time stays put.

Common questions from Kuwait City

Can I get one-to-one SAT tutoring in Kuwait?

Yes, online. Altair Prep teaches students in Kuwait City and across Kuwait live over a shared interactive whiteboard that both tutor and student write on, at a fixed weekly time in Kuwait's own evening. Every lesson is taught by Lewis Watson, a Cambridge-educated tutor with a perfect 1600, who covers both Math and Reading and Writing himself.

What time are SAT lessons for students in Kuwait?

Kuwait is on UTC+3, two hours ahead of the UK in summer and three in winter, so a 6.00pm lesson in Kuwait City falls in the middle of a UK working afternoon. Altair Prep holds evening slots in Kuwait time as a standing weekly appointment, and because the Kuwaiti school week runs Sunday to Thursday, Friday and Saturday lessons are also available.

Does the SAT matter for Kuwaiti government scholarships?

Often, yes. Scholarship bodies in Kuwait commonly set minimum SAT scores for eligibility and for particular study destinations, and the thresholds are revised from year to year, so check the current requirements for your programme. Altair Prep treats a published threshold as the target and plans the sittings so there is a resit in hand before the submission deadline.

Where can students in Kuwait sit the SAT?

At approved international test centres in Kuwait, usually hosted by schools. Which centres open for a given sitting changes from date to date, so use College Board's test centre search when registration opens rather than assuming a particular school will host again. Capacity is limited, and seats for the autumn sittings can go well before the registration deadline.

Preparing for the SAT in Kuwait?

Tell Lewis the target score or the scholarship threshold, the sitting you are aiming at and where the marks are going now. The intro call and the trial lesson are both free, both in Kuwait time, and there is nothing to pay before them.
